Winter Sports

A winter sport is a sport commonly played during the winter, but could also be played other times during the year as long as weather conditions are suitable. These sports require cold weather and usually are done on snow or ice. The main winter sports are skiing and snowboarding, however figure skating, ice hockey and bobsledding are favorites too.

Skiing is the winter sport that involves using two fiberglass skis with metal edges strapped to your feet by ski bindings to trek down a slope of a mountain. Downhill skiing is shown to the right where skiers use long, thin skis to glide down big slopes. This technique became popular after the invention of ski lifts used to ascend the mountian.

Snowboarding is a boardsport that involves descending a snow-covered slope while attached to a board. Snowboarders have taken the traditional form of descending down a hill into an extreme sport. In the picture to the left, the snowboarder is flying through the air after going off of a jump made out of snow on the slope. Many other tricks acompany snowboarding like grinding on rails and jumping off jumps.

The picture shows a couple ice dancing which is for couples consisting of a woman and a man skating together. Ice dance focuses on intricate footwork performed in close dance holds and in time with the music. Ice dancers do not perform the acrobatic jumps, throws, and lifts of pair skating. This sport was developed on the basis of ice skating where individuals wear blades on the bottom of their feet which allows them to glide across the ice.

Hockey is a popular winter team sport played on ice, where the objective of the game is to score the most goals. You can do this by shooting a puck, a small, round, 3/4 inch rubber disk, into the opponent's goal using a long stick with a blade. The picture to the left shows two teammates passing the puck back and forth as a strategy to get the puck down the rink. Players can fall and hurt themselves on the ice so, as you can see, hockey requires a lot of padding.

Bobsledding is a winter sport where teams of two or four people steer a sled down an icy track. The goal is to be the fastest down the track. This is a picture of a bobsled bending around a corner during a race. The bobsled track has to be angeled just right to allow the bobseld to get around the corner. It cannot just turn on a flat surface. Bobsleds can reach up to speeds greater than 84 mph! Bobsledding is a winter sport because it requires freezing temperatures for an icy track for the blades to travel.

Dove: Campaign for Real Beauty

This is an image of the world. Each continent is distinguished by a different color. As you can see, there are 6 continents shown, but we know there are 7 continents. Antarctica is not pictured in this image, which would be at the bottom below the other continents.

This is a picture of someone getting creamed. We used nasty ingredients like tuna, mustard, ketchup, eggs, jam, and yogurt. It was a disgusting activity for the one getting creamed, but a lot of fun for the one creaming.
